New York, 14 March 2020 (SPS) – The United Nations Secretariat said on Thursday that UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres is convinced that a just settlement of the Saharawi cause is still possible.
According to media reports, the UN General Secretariat has prepared a document on the commendable steps taken by the UN SG to achieve a just, permanent and mutually accepted political settlement guaranteeing the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.
The UN SG appealed to the members of the International Security Council, friends of Western Sahara and other actors to encourage the parties to the conflict in Western Sahara, namely Morocco and the Polisario, to engage «in good faith» and «without preconditions» in the political process, as soon as a new personal envoy is appointed.
According to the document, a large number of UN member countries have expressed, during the meetings of the Decolonization Commission held last October, their support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.
The UN General Assembly had unanimously adopted a recommendation on Western Sahara in December 2019 and requested the Special Committee on the Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples to continue to examine the case of Western Sahara and to submit a report to the UN GA at its 75th session, the document states.
The said Commission called on the UN SG to submit a report on the implementation of this decision to the 75th session of the GA. (SPS)
