Addis Ababa (African Union) 12 December 2020 (SPS)– The African Union maintains it position on Western Sahara, despite President Trump’s proclamation supporting Moroccan occupation.

Ms. Ebba Kalondo, Spokesperson of AU Commission chair, Moussa Faki Mahamat, said on her official Twitter account after Trump’s twitts, that the AU supports the self-determination of Western Sahara through a free and fair referendum as decided by the UN Security Council.

«The position of the African Union remains unchanged, in conformity with relevant AU and United Nations resolutions,» Ms Kalondo wrote on Twitter on Friday.

Both Saharawi Republic and Morocco are members of the AU although Morocco sees the occupied zones of Western Sahara as part of its territory.

Morocco is violating AU Constitutive Act’s main founding principles, mainly the respect of borders inherited upon independence and non use of force to resolve conflicts. (SPS)
