Brussels, Feb 26, 2018 (SPS) – The EU imports of products from the occupied Western Sahara is a source of worry to the European deputies who demanded from the Commission to explain the legal basis  for authorizing those imports after the decision of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) of December 2016.
In a question sent to the European commission, twenty Euro-deputies from various political groups at the European Parliament, said that in 2017, the Commission has authorized the companies operating in the occupied Western Sahara to export foodstuffs of animal origin to the European Union (EU).
Those European deputies like Ivo Vajgl, Norbert Neuser, Javier Couso Permuy and Ana Gomes demanded from the Commission to explain the legal basis those companies have been allowed to export their products to the EU.»
The Court of Justice of the European Union has however concluded that the EU-Morocco Association Agreements are not applicable in Western Sahara, stressing the «distinct» status of this territory from Morocco. (SPS)
