Brussels (Belgium), May 20, 2016 (SPS) – The European Union (EU) expressed Thursday, its support to the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), underlining the importance of its mandate to reach a solution in accordance with international law.
“The EU supports the MINURSO and its important mandate,” wrote the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security policy, Federica Mogherini in her response on behalf of the European Commission, to the question of Spanish Eurodeputy Paloma Lopez’s question on the expulsion of the MINURSO’s civilian component, underlining that the EU “broached this issue as part of its political dialogue with Morocco.”
The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs reiterated, in this regard, the support of the EU to the efforts made by the United Nations’ Secretary General to “reach a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution that allows the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara, as part of arrangements that comply with the goals and principles of the United Nations charter.”
Mogherini hailed the efforts made by the Personal Envoy of the United Nations’ Secretary General to Western Sahara, Christopher Ross, noting that “the UN Security Council remains seized with the issue.”
