Paris, Oct 22, 2017 (SPS) – President of the Algerian National Committee of Solidarity with the Sahrawi People (CNASPS) Said Ayachi underlined Saturday, in Paris, the need to return to the fundamentals of the issue of Western Sahara and set a date for the organization of a self-determination referendum for the Sahrawi people.
“We must absolutely return to the fundamentals of the issue, namely the organization of a referendum as well as to what was promised to the Sahrawi people during the signing of the ceasefire in 1991, as well as the preparation of a self-determination referendum while setting a date for it,” Ayach told APS on the sidelines of the 42nd European Coordinating Conference of Support to the Sahrawi people (EUCOCO 2017).
For Ayachi, the Sahrawi issue is experiencing a “turning point” in its development, especially with the appointment of the new personal envoy of the United Nations Secretary General for Western Sahara Host Kohler whose mission is to bring the protagonists into serious discussions to reach a solution to this conflict.”
In the same regard, Ayachi underlined that this situation is marked by Morocco’s failure within the African Union (AU), after trying to prevent the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) from participating in the next summit of the European Union-African Union Partnership Summit in Abidjan, in Ivory Coast.
He also underlined Morocco’s stubbornness and attempt to defy the international community as it “practices the strategy of headlong rush and neglects the issue.”
