Bir Lahlou (Liberated Territories), April 7, 2018 (SPS) – The Frente Polisario has taken note with satisfaction of the report on Western Sahara the United Nations Secretary-General has submitted to the Security Council late March, reiterating commitment to the peace process and support to the UN efforts to reach a peaceful solution that provides for the self-determination to the Saharawi people.
The Polisario Front, in a statement, «reaffirms its strong commitment to the UN peace process, to the ceasefire, to the related military agreement N°1, and to cooperating fully with the efforts undertaken by the UN Secretary-General and his personal Envoy for Western Sahara, Horst Kohler, with a view to achieving a peaceful, just and lasting solution that provides for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara.»
The report «clearly refutes all the false allegations and unfounded claims made by Morocco for propaganda purposes regarding alleged violations of the ceasefire by the Frente Polisario.»
Polisario’s response came a few days after UN’s formal denial of Morocco’s accusations about alleged movement of military Saharawi elements in the buffer zone of Guerguerat, which is under the monitoring of the United Nations.
«Our colleagues in MINURSO (United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara) have not observed any movement of military elements in the northeast territory. MINURSO continues to monitor the situation closely,» Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman for the UN secretary General, said in his daily press briefing.
On human rights, «the report provides a good indication of Morocco’s violation of the human rights of the Saharawis in the occupied territory, including the Gdeim Izik trial,» the Polisario’s statement said.
«The report acknowledges that human rights concerns are linked to the non-realization of the right to self-determination,» it added.
In addition, the report «underscores the necessity for and importance of independent, impartial and sustained monitoring of human rights for the people of Western Sahara.»
It also «highlights the respect for and promotion of human rights by the Frente Polisario in the Saharawi refugee camps.» (SPS)
