New York, Oct 10, 2019 (SPS) – Permanent Representative of Uruguay to the United Nations Luis Bermudez reiterated Tuesday, in New York, his country’s support to the Sahrawi people’s inalienable right to self-determination as s solution to the conflict in Western Sahara.
In his speech at the United Nations Fourth Committee “Special Political and Decolonization committee,” Bermudez underlined the importance, in current circumstances, to resume talks in good faith with the two parties to the conflict, namely Morocco and the Frente POLISARIO, to reach a lasting political solution while enabling the Sahrawi people’s to exercise their right to self-determination.
The ambassador reiterated the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, in accordance with the international law, principles and objectives of UN Charter, resolution 1514 and other resolutions of the general Assembly and Security Council.
He also said that his country encourages the African Union’s role, as well as that of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, adding that the immediate appointment of a new personal envoy for Western Sahara is necessary to speed up the decolonization process and resolution of this long conflict.
In this regard, he affirmed that his country is willing to back and accompany MINURSO in order to discharge the mandate for which it was created, in accordance with the resolution 690 of the Security Council of 29 April 1991. SPS
