New York, 12 May 2020 (SPS) – The Frente POLISARIO representative to the United Nations, Sidi Mohamed Omar, reaffirmed that the appointment of an envoy to Western Sahara is not a goal or an objective but a means of revival the peace process for the organization of a self-determination referendum in Western Sahara.
The Sahrawi diplomat who was the guest Monday evening of a virtual round table organized by the League for the protection of Sahrawi prisoners in Moroccan prisons, under the theme: «The United Nations and the peace plan in Western Sahara», said that «what the POLISARIO expressed in this regard was and is still clear and unanimous for all Sahrawis, in particular during the 15th Congress held at the end of December 2019 in liberated Tifariti, reiterated by the president, Brahim Ghali , in his message to the United Nations Secretary-General on December 28, 2019 «.
Mr. Sidi Omar noted the five main points which were mentioned in the message from the President of the Republic, as conditions for the restoration of the confidence of the Saharawi people in the United Nations and the serious political process based on a clear and solid basis. which would allow the Saharawi people to have the right to self-determination, and to clarify the procedures to ensure direct negotiations between the two parties to the conflict (the Frente POLISARIO and Morocco).
He also clarified in his speech that the position of the Frente POLISARIO expressed on the eve of the Security Council’s approval of resolution 2494 (2019) resulted from the adoption by the Council of this resolution without concrete measures to advance the peace process sponsored by the United Nations, considering it as a real brake on the dynamics that the Council created and maintained for 18 months, stressing that this position was at the service of the expansionary colonial policy of the Moroccan regime in the occupied parts of the Sahrawi Republic.
On the other hand, the Sahrawi Diplomate, pointed a finger at «the United Nations and the Security Council, responsible for blocking the peace process, because of the inaction towards the intransigence of the Moroccan regime supported by certain members of the Council, and its refusal to respect international law and to engage seriously in the settlement process, in order to eliminate colonialism from Western Sahara, by referendum on self-determination as stipulated in Council resolution 690 (1991) security, by which the MINURSO mission was created «.
In response to a question about the attempts of the Moroccan occupation to use certain foreign entities to open «consular representations» in the occupied territories, and sign economic agreements with the European Union with the support of certain European countries in the aim to undermine the peace process, the Saharawi official said that all these steps are only «evidence of Morocco’s bad intentions towards the settlement process».
Western Sahara has been placed on the agenda of the General Assembly of the United Nations and, therefore, on the agenda of the Fourth Committee and the Special Committee of the UN General Assembly on decolonization (C-24), since 1963 as a non-self-governing territory to which the Declaration on the granting of independence of colonial countries and peoples applies (Assembly resolution 1514 (XV) of 14 December 1960) , in accordance with international law and UN resolutions.
