Windhoek (Namibia) 19 September 2020 (SPS) – The African Continent Coordination of the Women’s March Global organized Friday in Windhoek, Namibia, a virtual symposium on the human rights violations facing African women, taking the case of Sahrawi women in the occupied territories of the Sahrawi Republic and African women in countries of conflict as a model.
The symposium was attended by women from many African countries such as Mozambique, Kenya, South Africa, Somalia and the Sahrawi Republic, where a documentary on the violations suffered by the Sahrawi women in the occupied parts of the Sahrawi Republic was screened.
The documentary exposes the methods practiced by the Kingdom of Morocco, which occupies large parts of the territory of the Sahrawi Republic, against the legitimate struggle of Sahrawi women for enabling the Sahrawi people to exercise their legitimate rights to freedom and self-determination.
«Morocco’s human rights violations in Western Sahara since 1975 have posed a major challenge to Sahrawi women who have been fighting and expressing the just demands of the people, and history has recorded many examples of women who have been imprisoned and tortured,» said Maryam Hammadi, on behalf of Sahrawi women.
The symposium focused on several topics related to the exposure of African women to human rights violations, particularly women living in conflict zones and under occupation, as well as discussing ways to improve the status of women who are at fragile economic levels by creating women-led economic development spaces in areas such as agriculture, solidarity economy, food sovereignty and limiting the women’s migration outside Africa.
