Sydney, Australia, April 01, 2021 (SPS) – The Australian Labor Party called on the United Nations to organize a self-determination referendum without delay in Western Sahara.

In a motion on Western Sahara approved during the party’s congress held virtually on March 30 and 31, the Australian party said that it “strongly supports the efforts of the United Nations for the Sahrawi people to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination, in accordance with the UN resolutions and the 1991 Peace Plan, as promised ”.

In relation to respect for individual freedoms and human rights, the Labor party urged the United Nations to «grant its mission the mandate to monitor the human rights situation and report on it.» In this sense, the Representative of the Frente POLISARIO to Australia, Mr. Kamal Fadel, said, in statements to the Saharawi Press Agency (SPS), that “this important motion has great significance because it comes in the middle of a decisive stage in the struggle of the Saharawi people, taking into account the weight of the Australian Labor Party at the national and international level ”.
