Ravensdown asked to hand over $7m to Sahawari Government

Refugees in Algeria are waiting for a resolution to the conflict over their homeland in Western Sahara.

The Sahawari Government has asked fertiliser company Ravensdown to give it $7 million – the value of the phosphate cargo landed in Napier on Friday.

Either that or turn the ship away from port, a representative from the freedom fighting movement Polisario, Kamal Fadel said.

Both Ballance Agri-Nutrients and Ravensdown have refused to back down on the controversial trade, saying phosphate «drives prosperity and social wellbeing in a wide variety of Kiwi communities».

Pressure is mounting on the companies to stop importing phosphate from the Western Sahara. Lobby group Western Sahara Resource Watch says from the beginning of next year the number of importers will have fallen to only three – New Zealand co-operatives Ballance Agri-Nutrients, Ravensdown and Paradip of India.
