London, July 28, 2016 (SPS) – The human rights organization Amnesty International (AI) called, on Wednesday, for a fair civil trial in accordance with international standards for the Sahrawi political prisoners of Gdeim Izik, arbitrarily held by the Moroccan occupation authorities.
After the first unfair trial in 2013, before a military court, the new civil trial is expected to be «fair, in accordance with fair trial standards and based on impartial investigation,» said the NOG.
Amnesty International said that a new civil trial for the 25 defendants, of whom 21 are serving long-term sentences for having participated in protests in Western Sahara in 2010, «has been long-awaited for.»
AI Middle East and North Africa Deputy Director Magdalena Mughrabi said that a new trial for the Sahrawi prisoners, «held in prison for over five years, serving long prison sentences, offering a glimmer of hope that justice could be restored.» SPS
